The Singapore Army has acquired the manportable Rafael Advanced Defense Systems Spike Short Range (SR) missile system as the next-generation guided anti-armour weapon for its infantry forces, Jane's has learnt at the army's Open House 2017 event that was held from 27 to 29 May.

Jane's understands that the Spike SR has replaced the ageing Saab Bofors Dynamics 84 mm Carl Gustaf recoilless rifle and is now "fully operational". It is primarily employed by the service's infantry, although Jane's understands that it may also be employed by its commando and guards depending on mission requirements.

The Spike SR is the latest and most compact member of Rafael's Spike fire-and-forget missile family. Specifications released by the army describe the system as a disposable, day/night-capable weapon that is 970 mm long with an overall weight of 9.8 kg inclusive of the missile, control launch unit (CLU), and battery.

Unlike the gimballed seeker installed in the Spike MR/LR/ER (medium-, long-, and extended-range) missiles, the Spike SR incorporates an uncooled and fixed day/night-capable electro-optical (EO) seeker and tracker. According to company literature, the SR has a short activation-to-launch cycle of less than six seconds.

The baseline Spike SR configuration features a tandem high-explosive anti-tank (HEAT) warhead designed to engage static and moving armoured vehicle targets. However, Jane's reported in 2016 that Rafael has introduced a new penetration blast fragmentation (PBF) warhead - employing the warhead technology developed jointly by the Singapore Defence Science and Technology Agency (DSTA) and the company's Dynamit Nobel Defence subsidiary for the 90 mm MATADOR (Manportable Anti-Tank, Anti-DOoR) light support weapon - to provide troops operating in urban environments with a tactical anti-structure capability.

The service has also stated a minimum and maximum effective range of 100 m and 1,000 m respectively, although Rafael is now specifying a high hit probability against moving targets at ranges from 50 m up to 1,500 m.

  1. Sngapore could not win in any war even Cambodian can destroy this tiny country. As I said, Singaporeans are lack of experience in actual firefight. Their soldier is also a human being which could hampered them to back out in case that will trigger their soldiers hurt to palpitate due to nervousness and fear. You can physically seen that most of Singaporean Soldiers are very very young and looks like an office boy who cant be exposed into sunlight outside.

    1. The fact that we are not engage at any war is logically a good thing. Why would u wanna fight? When u live in peace and u r manage effectively as a whole u bring prosperity. Is it a proud thing when engage at war or proud when u r living peacefully and successfully? So what if cambodia has experience? Look at that countrt poorly develop. Focus on your economy and development instead of war machines at the end who wins? The one who lives happily with a generally stable life thats what i call a winner.

    2. Unfortunately you think to easlily. Cambodia cannot destroy singapore regardless as it has no capability in doing so. How are is it gonna attack singapore? It does not have any means to get there! So it is pointless. You cant get there u cant do anything candid. They do not have the means of transport its simple

    3. Realistically cambodia cannot get to singapore and attack. The navy has patrol crafts thats it. Landing crafts are normal and common in all militaries but is utilise to land on nearby islands or beaches or use on bigger size ships like LPD, LST where crafts can be launch and attack objectives that are far and require logistical suppot. Cambodia navy has patrol crafts and landing crafts which cannot even get here. Even if they did so by stocking fuel on their ship u must account for food for your men so too bad u cant. By the time u reach you run out of fuel and u are combat useless and get blown to pieces as u cant manevoure your vessel without fuel. Besides those patrol crafts arent for carrying soldiers for attack and is manned by a crew of 30 or more. So its pointleds.Same for the airforce as well

    6. Its easy for me to say that. Im not here degrading you making fun of you. I am being realistic. At what cost did the vietnam war affect the nations. America lost a lot of men they used so much money in the conflict. Vietnam be it north or south both lose a lot of people no one gains in conflict. Thailand and cambodia were affected. Even after the war ended the region was still in a tense situation. As long as you do not get involve in conflicts best is to avoid of course then your country can grow. Look at switzerland as an example they have always maintain neutrality because of this they can develop their country with the ease of their minds at the same time maintain a capable military. Not being involved in a conflict is something good because your country is able to function well.
