DND mulls purchase of Russian weaponry

MANILA -- The Philippines is planning to acquire weapons, including advanced diesel-electric submarines from Russia

This was disclosed by Department of National Defense (DND) Secretary Delfin Lorenzana in an interview on PNA Exclusive in Moscow, Russia around 2 p.m. Tuesday (7 p.m., Manila time).

"Yes, we have plans to purchase weapons from them. They have also very sophisticated and advanced weaponry. We will look into them, we have not decided what equipment but off the bat, we are looking, we would like to develop our submarine force so we will look into their submarines one of these days," he added.

Lorenzana was with President Rodrigo Duterte on his official trip to Russia which was cut short by the ongoing clash between government forces and Maute Group terrorists in Marawi City, Lanao Del Sur.

"If we can buy submarines or if they are affordable for us, or if the Philippine Navy would be willing to go there because we will give it to the Navy to decide what kind of submarine they would like to purchase. That is one of the plans that the PN (wants) is to develop some submarine capabilities," the DND chief pointed out.

And when asked on where these vessels will be based, Lorenzana said that they are looking into that detail.

"We will look into that. We don’t have any submarine base yet in the Philippines but if we will purchase already then we have to develop a submarine base to keep those submarines safe," Lorenzana pointed out.

Another Russian-made weapon being looked by the Philippines is sniper rifles and precision-guided munitions which can be used for the country's brand-new FA-50 "Fighting Eagle" jet aircraft and AW-109 attack helicopters.

"So one of the things that we are considering is the sniper rifles of the Russians, they have very good sniper rifles. They also have very good precision-guided munition that we can use with our FA-50s, and our attack helicopters. Those are the items. But we have to see more because sometime this year, there will be this defense exhibition that they are going to hold here and we will send some people to look into it," the DND chief added.

    8. Hey dark side you have no rights to insult our military, you so arrogant to say that the Philippines have no capable of buying modern and lethal weapons, maybe you have lack of knowledge in some military informations,,,, don't forget the Philippine Armed Forces are one of the world's most experienced in actual battle and reselient army, and furthermore the ongoing modernization is moving faster like the economic is growing faster to prove that recently the Philippine economic surpassed Singapore and Malaysia. Philippine economic are now next to Indonesia and Thailand!

  6. Ok lets talk facts.

How much is the Philipine defense budget?
They dont have the infrastructure to support submarine operation.
The current focus is on surface vessels.

This is nothing more than rhetoric. It would take them more than 10 years to be on par let alone to challenge any of the other SEA sub surface fleet.

    1. well in the mind of pinoy, it like this. buy submarine first just to show that we are strong than after that no support infra for sub and the so called pride of pn will just be a harbour queen.

  8. I am from Philippines our military is already in implementation stage of some big ticket items that are part of modernization. I cant say whether the submarine or multi role fighters are included. BTW I understand that some of our Asean bro under estimated our capacity and funding for military upgrade. Im hoping that we can achieve our goals in the near future

Ur not from around here are u bro? Get a life

      Marky

I myself do not underestimate the Philipines (like somebody would believe). But seriously bro submarines?? That money can and should be spend elsewhere. After years of neglect the PAF deserve more funding.

    2. I personally admit that submarine is even far from the current pipeline now. What the PHILIPPINE navy's current projection is to acquire more surface vessels a mixture of brandnew and second hand opv and anti-submarine corvettes

      Hapus
    3. @marky lumayag, that's a more reasonable planning. you need more surface vessels to patrol your vast sea. a submarine will only give deterrence and that's all. buying a submarine now will just eat all the budget that can be spent in something more important such as CASA(you guys really need this), mrf and asw corvette/opv.

    4. Marky lumayag... dream on.... poornoy

    5. @luqman you are right. Before the end of this year we will be receiving a single Pohang class corvette from South Korea. A welcome news for us and additional surface vessel with ASW capabilities but we need more of this ships in the future. Im hoping the Philippine Navy will allocate a bigger budget for the next corvettes

      Hapus
    6. Well, bro@marky l, i do hope that your dod will make a clear strategic plan, some thing like "a white paper" first. So that your difence force power progress which was started under the last presiden will continues and suitable(usefull) with the challenge that your country face.
But salute, for your goverment plan on subs procurement.
I believe that it came not only for "show case" but from the deep consent to keep your countries from the incoming threat.

  10. Pinoys can only dream on..They don't have the Defence Budget to sustain..need to have a Budget like Australia.

    BalasHapus
  11. We are no longer dreaming. our defense is already have sufficient budget if not big enough to acquire modern weapon platform. we already bought FA-50 fighter trainers, 2 SSVs, additional MPACs, attack and transport helicopters, 50000 rifles, snipers rifles frigates and so on. there are many equipments that will be delivered this year and next coming years
