Major milestone represents more than 500,000 hours of work

Boeing Defence Australia has completed its 100th F/A-18A/B Classic Hornet Deeper Maintenance to the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF), representing more than 500,000 hours of work over four years to keep one of Australia’s most reliable platforms in operation.

RAAF celebrated the milestone alongside the Boeing unit based at Williamtown, with Officer Commanding 81 Wing thanking the team for their efforts and reiterating the important role Boeing plays in supporting mission readiness.

“The incredible daily serviceability rates we’ve seen over the past couple of years have not been by accident. Without the coordinated and integrated efforts of Air Force, Boeing and other support agencies, we would be unable to sustain such a high tempo on operations in the Middle East and in vital training in Australia,’ said an 81 Wing spokesperson.

Boeing Defence Australia Integrated Services and Support General Manager Murray Brabrook said the Classic Hornet was a reliable workhorse in theatre, with the team maintaining around 10 aircraft at any one time during RAAF operations such as OKRA.

“Boeing conducted 59 Classic Hornet test flights in 2016 alone, with the team at Williamtown working diligently to ensure we provide the RAAF with a quality product on time and within budget,” said Brabrook.

If im not mistaken our hornet went through the 25X modernization program in 2015-2016.

The F/A 18s were design with an airframe life of 6000 flight hours. The average flight hours of an RMAF Hornet is around 3000 flight hours. So as u can see theres alot of flying hours left and with constant upgrade they are on par (or even better) with other SEA air force fighter fleet.

The hornets were newly built and delivered in 1997. Only one aircraft suffered a mishap but was repaired and returned to flight status. They are the work horse of the RMAF. High serviceability rate and ease of maintanance made them a favourite in the RMAF fleet even more than the MKMs (thats saying a lot).

The TNI AU F16 were built during the 1980's. I dont know how much flying hours they have but with proper maintanance they gonna be flying in the foreseeable future (not good news for bro muarif).

    10. Shed@ sayapun tak tahulah sudah berapa kali F16 indonesia maintenance, tapi yg saya tahu F16 kena embargo USA,F16 pakistan pun kena embargo, tapi beza dgn F16 israel telah banyak tewaskan rakyat palestine tapi USA tak beri embargo,USA nih sangat teruklah, standard ganda...kerana case inilah indonesia belajar nak bina jet pejuang buatan tempatan like IFX project supaya kedepannya indonesia tak de masalah kena embargo lagi bro

    11. Kfx uses american made engines. Its the US. A world power. The same as Russia. Eventhough embargoed, the TNI AU F16 fleet continue to fly (by the way of cannibalized part and ect). When the Indonesian - soviet relation went sour it dindnt take a long time before many of the soviet made weaponry went kaput (give and take a few items such as the kri pasopati that was retired during the early 1990s).

So,gagasan anti-embargo melalui kemandirian militer(indonesia) setakat ni tu cuma rhetoric la bro??

      Hapus
    13. @anak peneroka not rhetoric but the first step to achieve an embargo-proof fleet. Got to start somewhere. At first some parts will still need to be imported but eventually we will be able to build everything ourselves.

The engines are probably the hardest part to produce. It requires a very high capability in metallurgy and other engineering fields. Look at China. They've been building indigenous fighter jets (some of them are stealth) and yet they are still unable to produce a reliable high performance engine because they lack in the field of metallurgy.

Indonesia will need to take thid challenge step by step. And the IFX is the first step to independencw on that field.

Setuju setiap langkah perlu dimulakan dengan langkah pertama..

Persoalannya..adakah ia langkah yg tepat pada masa yg betul ??

Ya china belum mampu produksi reliable engine..tapi itu bukan bermakna kemampuan engineering china hanya selevel Asean..

      Hapus
    15. I personally think that it is the right step and it is already pretty late to start. But late is better than not at all.

No I'm not saying that their engineering level is just at ASEAN level. I'm just using that as an example to illustrate how long and hard the process is to reach the kind of independence from embargos that Indonesia is aiming to reach.

I picked China and engines because Shed said something about IFX and american engines, which is the truth but caused you to question whether the program is just a rhetoric. It's just an illustration.

      Hapus
    16. GerhardA

Ok you got the point there.

      Hapus
    17. Anak peneroka@ ini tak lah rethoric bro, kalo hanya rethoric jer dan tak sungguh2 manalah kerajaan indonesia sokong project IFX tuh dgn budget US$ 2 billion...indonesia bukan baru kenal aircraft industry bro,PT DI ditubuhkan tahun 1967

Shed @ setakat ini untuk IFX batch I kami guna engine USA,but nantinya bila USA kenakan standard ganda cem embargo kami guna engine buatan negara lain bro,ada banyak pilihan engine buatan negara lain like rusia, canada, france ataupun kami boleh guna engine airbus typhoon bro

      Hapus
    18. I don't really know whether we've taken the wrong first step or not. Only time will tell.

I agree that the step we take is pretty unorthodox because we jumped right into engineering a stealth aircraft from scratch but I don't really think that it's a wrong step.

Most countries normally start by licensing the right to build a model, then copying, the engineering it themselves but they usually do it alone.

Indonesia is working together with South Korea which is pretty experienced in fighter jet design and building by finacing the program and sending our engineers to help and learn. South Korea is technologically very advanced and they are also receiving technology from the US as an offset for buying the F-35 (other than 4 core techs). So Indonesia is pretty much trying to skip the standard first and second steps.

A possible example (although not exactly the same) is India. They're working together with Russia in the PAK-FA program. India has already built some fighter jets but still the jump in technology level is pretty similar.

No embargo free is not similar to superpower. It just means that we are not going to be crippled when a country embargoes us. What made you think that those 2 are the same?

The MMEA ship was a prime example. It looks like the Malaysia gov is trying to get a similar deal with the orions. Btw the orion was meant to be a stopgap and as a learning tool before we could operate a fully fledge MPA squadron.
