The first Armidale-class patrol boat was delivered to the Royal Australian Navy May 17. HMAS Armidale, built by Austal Ships, was launched Jan. 24.

The HMAS Armidale was to be commissioned June 24 and is the first of 14 units expected to commission into the Royal Australian Navy by 2009 under Project Sea 1444. The original contract called for 12 units of the class; however, it has been expanded to 14 units in accordance with the 2005-2006 budget statements released on May 6.

Construction of the first unit began in late 2003, following the signing of a $215.8 million contract by Austal Ships.

Austal, in partnership with Defense Maritime Services, was selected in August 2003 as the preferred supplier of the vessels as well as for life-support services for the class.

The next two units are expected to be commissioned by the end of 2005, followed by four units per year in 2006 and 2007, with units 12-14 in 2008.
